One does not usually associate beautiful jewelry with the time of the Spanish Inquisition. But in the Smithsonian Institution’s collection of jewelry, there is an exquisite necklace holder stand of diamonds and emeralds.

It is a spectacular double row of diamonds and emeralds finishing in a chandelier of emeralds. There’s unfortunately very little information about the provenance of this necklace holder. The big diamonds and Columbian emeralds were most likely cut in India in the 17th century. This would make them one of the earliest examples of cut gemstones in the Smithsonian’s Collection. They are really only stories surrounding this necklace and what kind of necklace display stand were used in this era. They indicate that it was worn at times by Spanish and French high class society. In the early 20th century, it was bought by the Maharajah of Indore, whose son sold the necklace in 1947 to Harry Winston. Winston then sold the necklace to Mrs. Cora Hubbard Williams of Pittsburgh. She donated it to the Smithsonian in 1972.

Emeralds are a type of crystal known as beryls. Beryls are normally clear crystals, but when placed with chromium or vanadium, they attain various gradations of green. The purest green are the rarest emeralds and many people actually like an emerald that has a blue-green tint.

Before the 16th century, the only known emerald deposits were in Cleopatra’s Egyptian mines. But after emeralds were found in Columbia, those later became the “gold standard” in emeralds. Columbian emeralds have been discovered by archaeologists among artifacts of such tribes as the Inca, Maya, Aztec, Toltec and the lesser-known Chibcha Indians.

Disk drives should only be opened in clean rooms and kept there until the recovery is complete and the drive is closed. In recent times with the “Credit Crunch” beginning to bite a lot of people may well be tempted to try to repair or recover their data from a failed hard disk drive or memory stick. In a recent case a teacher brought in a laptop hard disk drive which had been previously diagnosed by the schools own IT department. The result of this test was that the heads appeared to have been “blown” by a power surge through the drive.

Upon further discussion, with the client, it transpired that the IT dept had decided to remove the HDD from the laptop and as it was an IDE device mount it as an external storage device by using an IDE connector. Unfortunately they plugged the HDD to the connector “upside down” meaning that crucially the drive received a huge power spike through it when the connector was hooked up to a PC.

It appears that the lack of care taken by the IT dept has caused the drive far more problems that what was probably a simple case of “bad sectors” on a hard disk drive. The cost of a simple bad sectors recovery has now become a full HDD rebuild with the search now on for suitable parts – causing delay and additional costs to the School concerned.

Naturally the client is somewhat annoyed that his data, whilst probably still recoverable, is likely to cost much more and take longer in the recovery process.

Unfortunately most Data Recovery Companies will probably have their own tales of customer mishap or IT Technicians making their job more difficult through there well intentioned but often misinformed knowledge of hard disk drive technology.

So the moral of this is that whilst many people will look for a quick and cheap fix for their hard drive recovery problems, they really are best leaving it to the experts.
